SAAS (Software As A Service) is becoming the dominant method for distributing software to users and has many advantages over the traditional software delivery model. The conventional method of downloading and installing software on the end user’s workstation is being phased out in favor of this more efficient method, ultimately saving time on both the end user’s side and on the I.T. side in terms of troubleshooting and operations.
SAAS solutions are available online, creating a need for the solution to be accessible 24 hours a day without fail, making the I.T. delivery infrastructure critical to operational success and customer satisfaction. Since the user generally only has to travel to a specific URL in order to access the solution, it becomes a simple matter to work while at home or on the move.
The phrase “Cloud Computing” is often used interchangeably with SAAS, although SAAS is normally associated with lease-based, monetized and custom solutions, while Cloud Computing is geared more toward necessarily free or value added services like storage, backups and e-mail.
What does this mean for you?
SAAS solutions at EDN are normally implemented in one of two ways:
- 1. As a remote access, remote managed solution.
- 2. As a fully installed, co-located solution.
This means the leasee has zero infrastructure at the point where the SAAS solution is accessed. No servers, no software installation, and no associated burden of maintaining backups, updates and continuing connectivity. (responsibilities that are also present with on-site infrastructure)
This means that the necessary infrastructure is installed in a secured, operationally consistent location, where available data access, power and climate control are available. In most cases this means a single rack-mount SAAS server is installed in an already existing co-location facility.
EDN’s Cypress Digital Signage Solution is delivered to our customers through SAAS via the Internet, freeing you from potentially complex software and hardware management, installation, maintenance and updates. Access to Cypress is easy: you just need an Internet connection.
